New Hosting Location

26 March 2012

As many have you will be aware we have been updating and moving hosted websites over the last few months to a new host server. This process will be completed in the next few days with only 5-64 websites remaining to be moved.

The new location is the Earthlink Colocation Data Center in Rochester, NY. This is a highly secure and advanced facility with uptime guarantees and 24/7/365 monitoring and support.

As you can see from the link and graphic above the data centre is equipped with multiple redundant connections to the Internet as well as to power and cooling supplies.

While our previous setup served us well for the last 7-8 years we are confident that Earthlink can provide us with a stable hosting platform and upgrade path into the future. It is also closer (in Internet terms) to most of our clients and a much more powerful server, running the latest software and our strictest firewall to date.

In addition to the change of hosting location, we have also split off our DNS and MX (mail) settings to a separate server, running on a Linode VPS. This provides for maximum flexibility and recoverability in the unlikely case of disruptions to service.

Finally, all our hosted websites are now being backed up nightly to Amazon S3 cloud storage allowing for a complete restoration at any time. This is in addition to our regular weekly off-site backups and 12-month archive.
